UK filter maker eyes growth in Kenya

Posted By Neilas Svilpa, 17 April 2023
A leading UK process filter manufacturer has begun a strategic drive to grow business in Kenya.

Engineering experts from Amazon Filters are in the African country this month (April) in a bid to add it to their portfolio of export markets across the world.

They have lined up visits to factories and production facilities in sectors such as water treatment, food and beverage, and pharma.

Sales engineer Gareth Davies and distributor partner Ian Thomas will meet senior plant and operations managers at companies in Nairobi and other industrial centres.

Gareth said: “We’re looking to help prospective customers in a range of sectors that rely on robust filtration solutions for safety and consistency.

“We aim to promote our expertise in designing and supplying products and systems that help to reduce the risks of contamination in gases and fluids while safeguarding operators and equipment.

“From our experience in other markets, we believe there may well be opportunities to grow business in Kenya from the sales of bespoke housings as well as filters.”

Ian, a director of UK-East Africa business support consultancy Crested Crane Connections, said: “Kenya is seeing more and more investment in economic growth including on sustainable projects involving green hydrogen production and electric vehicle manufacture.

“There are also many established industries such as brewing and bottling, pharma and vaccination manufacture which depend on safe process engineering.

“Filtration systems play crucial roles in protecting many of the processes involved and so we are keen to meet as many managers and operators as possible to understand if we can help them and their sector activities.”

From its main production centre in Camberley, Surrey, 38-year-old Amazon Filters has built a network of sales offices and distributors around the world underpinned by organic year-on-year growth.

More than 70% of the company’s total output of filters, housings and related safety equipment is now exported each year.

International reach has most recently been bolstered by the hiring of new business development managers in both the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions.

Amazon Filters has also appointed new partners and distributors tasked with pursuing sales growth in these territories.

The company already has African partners based in Nigeria, Uganda and South Africa.

Filter maker backs team with new post of Head of People and Culture

Posted By Neilas Svilpa, 20 February 2023

A leading industrial filter maker has created the dedicated post of Head of People and Culture, promoting a long-standing HR professional into the new role.

Ruth Pappadakis, who celebrates her 15th anniversary at Surrey-based Amazon Filters this year, steps up from her previous post of HR Manager.

As well as continuing to oversee operational activities such as recruitment, payroll, compliance and HR information systems, Ruth now has a more strategic focus on the development of training, career progression, employee engagement, talent management, financial planning and company culture.

Ruth said: “I’m thrilled to be taking on this more senior role which is all about strengthening Amazon Filters’ commitment to recognise great employees

“We want to provide everyone with opportunities to realise their potential.

“At the same time, the role is designed to shape and champion a performance culture that aligns with our ESG strategy and business goals.”

Amazon Filters employs around 250 people, mainly based at its production centre in Camberley.

From welders to warehouse staff, machinists to marketers, all share in the task of providing essential filter cartridges, housings and solutions for sectors worldwide that rely on process filtration.

Among them are municipal water, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and coatings, food and beverage, oil and gas, and new energy production including green hydrogen.

Ruth said: “HR and company culture have changed massively over the years. When I joined, I was only the second person into what was a sole role. I progressed from HR Officer to Manager and now have a team of four reporting to me.

“As we have grown, so have the systems and processes supporting the HR function. We have come a long way over the past few years and people are part of that continuous journey.

“My role as Head of People and Culture involves further organisational transformation and change initiatives. We will continue to apply best practice methodologies with buy-in from senior managers to evolve and develop what Amazon Filters is today.”

An early action is organising a two-day, off-site strategy planning session. The aim is to ensure all departmental plans are fully aligned on employment engagement and company values and behaviours.

Ruth said she will be looking to strengthen inclusivity through an already-established Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Forum. “It’s about listening to people. Everyone needs to feel involved and know they have a voice in how we achieve things,” she said.

A revamp of the staff recognition scheme is also on the way. “We want to make recognition less ad hoc. And we will continue to provide mental health first aiders and financial wellbeing support. Communication is a central issue. Covid meant the loss of a lot of face-to-face contact and we want to ensure communication has a strong focus as we move on from that.”

Another aspect Ruth is keen to develop under ESG is community engagement. Under an agreement with Surrey charity CMPP, the Community Matters Partnership Project, employees can have two paid days volunteering on community projects. Last year, 47 days were volunteered, a figure Ruth wants to grow. “It’s an ideal opportunity to get out there in the community, network and show some of the behaviours and values that run throughout the business including human decency and showing we care.”

Ruth is keen to praise the support the HR function has from directors and senior managers, adding: “It’s great to have the confidence of the top team. They don’t see HR as an overhead. They agree the company couldn’t do what it does without HR. It is seen as a valued part of the business and that’s key.”

Ruth’s appointment is part of a wider team restructure that also sees colleague Heather Winter become Lead HR Business Partner, a role in which she will apply insight from having worked across many aspects of the HR function.

“Heather has been with us for four years and is a great asset to the team,” said Ruth. “She will be taking ownership of more operational activities.”

STEPPING UP. Ruth Pappadakis has been promoted to Head of People and Culture at filter manufacturer Amazon Filters.

Marsh Industries Launches "Make it Marsh" Campaign, Offering Substantial Price Reductions on Key Product Ranges

Posted By Neilas Svilpa, 06 February 2023

Marsh Industries, a UK-based family business and leading supplier in the off-mains drainage sector, is proud to announce its "Make it Marsh" campaign, aimed at providing significant price reductions on key product ranges.

Due to a positive trend in raw material prices, the company has been able to reduce prices on its domestic pump stations, Hydroil® oil separators, and Ensign® (the UK Market leading sewage treatment plant ranges) by 26%, 21%, and 19% respectively.

These price reductions are applicable to all deliveries and orders placed from February onwards, and are part of Marsh Industries' on-going commitment to supporting its customers during challenging times. The "Make it Marsh" campaign echoes the industry's call for manufacturers to take a realistic approach to pricing and help merchants remain competitive in the market.

In addition to the price reductions, Marsh Industries has also launched a comprehensive training program, including the distribution of 3000 USB memory sticks for on-the-job training. The company aims to support merchants in increasing their market share and winning more business through training and education.

Filter maker Amazon Filters launches £1 million investment programme

Posted By Neilas Svilpa, 11 November 2022

A process filter manufacturer has launched a £1 million capital investment programme to strengthen its production capacity and reach into global markets.

Amazon Filters is eyeing a substantial expansion of sales activity after taking on new premises and equipment at its Camberley, Surrey, production centre.

The 37-year-old firm has leased an additional 6,500 sq ft warehouse, which will be kitted out and used to relocate existing storage facilities, to complement its long-standing base on the Albany Park Estate.

The vacated storage facility is being converted into a new ground floor production hall - which will double the capacity to manufacture pleated filter cartridges, a mainstay of the firm’s product range - and a mezzanine component warehouse on the first floor.

The acquisition of the new warehouse gives Amazon Filters seven industrial units in a row at the business park.

Alongside the infrastructure spend, the firm has steadily increased the size of its workforce to around 250 personnel, a six per cent rise since April 2021.

There have been around 30 new starters in roles including filter production, sheet metal work, welding fabrication, housing assembly, operations and production support, proposals engineering, despatch and shipping, procurement management and various sales and office administration posts.

Neil Pizzey, Amazon Filters’ Managing Director, said: “Our new pleated filter production line is the first of a planned series of investments to enhance our ‘quick and able’ cartridge manufacturing capability.

“Our capital spend and recruitment activity will help us continue to meet the needs of customers in a growing range of global industries that rely on process filtration.

“These include the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors, municipal water, biopharmaceuticals, chemical processing and liquid coatings, and food and beverage production.

“Our investment programme in the UK will support our reach internationally which has been bolstered by the hiring of new business development managers in both the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions.

“We have also appointed new partners and distributors tasked with pursuing sales growth in these territories.”

The kitting out of the new warehouses, including design, racking, shelving and the installation of the mezzanine floor, is being completed by Southampton-based main contractor Hampshire Mezzanine Floors.

Sales Director Guy Lewington said: “It’s great to see Amazon Filters investing for the future and strengthening their reach into so many different sectors. As their main flooring and kit out contractor, we have a long-standing relationship with them going back more than 20 years. We have always found them great to deal with. Once again, we were keen to understand their requirements and agree the scope and size of the project before we started. As a result, we are able to complete the commission successfully and support their increase in production capacity.”

SPACE TO GROW. Amazon Filters’ Managing Director Neil Pizzey in what will be the Surrey-based manufacturer’s new mezzanine component warehouse.

Wessex Water - New Marketplace Challenge: Increased Monitoring Of Our Sewerage Network

Posted By Admin, 04 October 2022
We want to increase our ability to proactively monitor and identify issues in our sewer network (principally blockages and sewer health), in order to further reduce the number of flooding and pollution incidents that occur, while also improving customer service and environmental benefits.

Therefore, we are looking to significantly increase the number of in-sewer monitors across our network at key assets/locations, likely monitoring level but we are open to other options. Due to the potential scale and end user requirements, we are looking for a lower cost solution than the EDM-standard sewer level monitors.

The aim of this Marketplace challenge is to help us gain information and experience to inform procurement of a suitable monitor in the future.

We will trial potential monitors, and we are inviting suppliers to apply to take part.

We will be holding a Teams session to explain the background of the challenge and answer any questions you may have. This will take place on Monday 17 October, 15:45-16:45 UK time.  Please email marketplace@wessexwater.co.uk to register your interest and receive the dial-in details.

Find out all the details of the challenge at: https://marketplace.wessexwater.co.uk/challenges/increased-monitoring-of-our-sewerage-network-can-you-help/
