There are a large number of small sewage treatment plants of differing designs and ages across the country. The Environment Agency (EA) in England, Natural Resources in Wales (NRW), the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and Northern
Ireland Environment Agency (NIIEA) are showing increasing concern about the potential amount of pollution these plants could cause. One of the primary ways of preventing this pollution is to ensure that the plant is properly and correctly
maintained. British Water has been working closely with the environmental regulators to develop a training and accreditation scheme for service engineers. The regulators regard this as an important step in the prevention of pollution.
