The General binding rules: small sewage discharge to the ground set
that:
Your treatment system must meet the right British Standard
Your treatment system must meet the relevant British Standard in force at the time of installation. The standards currently in force for new systems are:
- BS EN 12566 for septic tanks and small sewage treatment plants
- BS 6297:2007 for drainage fields
British Water has made all reasonable efforts to collect all the current certified equipment and to ensure that the information provided in the following table is correct. The information is based on certificates provided by the manufacturers which, where possible, have been cross-checked with lists on Test House websites. British Water does not accept any liability for the accuracy of this information

If the product that you are seeking is not on the list, please ensure with the manufacturer that it has the required: CE/UKCA marking and that the manual or other documentation that came with your tank or treatment plant has a certificate of compliance
with a British Standard.

NOTES
1.Septic Tank Conversion Units
Septic tank with a separate secondary treatment unit approved under BS:EN12566 may be used to discharge treated sewage effluent to a watercourse without requiring an environmental permit, presuming that all the general binding rules are also complied with. In-tank retrofit kits can only be used if the operator first applies for and is granted an environmental permit.
2.Non-Electric Sewage Plants
There are a several non-electric sewage plants being introduced into the UK market, where these units require an additional primary chamber, please ensure that the primary chamber being supplied is the same both dimensionally and in volume capacity
as the product that wasted for EN12566-3 certification, failure to do so could invalidate the certification process test
