Water Industry Forum Blue Paper: Infrastructure Planning
This paper shares insights on infrastructure planning for the water sector based on Sharon Darcy's address at the WIF Annual Dinner.
Overview: England and Wales is facing a major challenge on water resources. By 2050, an extra five billion litres of water a day will be needed in England alone. That is on top of the 14 billion already being used. To help deliver this, the water sector is experiencing the largest investment programme in at least a generation.
This publication describes the development of a common set of principles to better enable the application and use of Natural Capital approaches and assessment type tools by the UK water industry, its regulators
and government policy makers.

thought leaders to explore how we can better embed value-driven decision-making across the sector.
WIF has partnered with key cross-sector initiatives – the Water Sector Multi-capitals Network and the Mainstreaming Nature-based Solutions Programme, to produce a concise overview
of the seminar and its key takeaways.
Define a process and consistent data set that allows manufacturers to provide mitigation indices for use in the SuDS Manual Simple Index Approach (SIA) as defined in The SuDS Manual (C753).
Flows and Loads - Sizing Criteria, Treatment Capacity for Sewage Treatment Systems
| Updated 2013 |
The aims of this code of practice are to:
Define site activity and sewage sources.
Promote a consistent approach to collecting accurate and complete loading information.
Promote the design and installation of appropriate treatment systems and so reduce the problem of undersized systems causing environmental contamination.
The British Water Supply Chain Task Force was established in April 2021 to address issues that had become threats or blockers to supply chain sustainability and well-being.
It aimed to create a more attractive and fertile business environment for suppliers by identifying and assessing the key issues, and addressing them head-on.
Solutions were to be focused on cross-sector collaboration and impact mitigation through a series of actions involving British Water and third-party stakeholders.
Supporting the delivery of the UK’s future water needs
| Published 2025 |
Objectives:
This paper outlines a structured approach to help water companies and suppliers navigate key challenges in Procurement, Cyclicality, and Innovation.
It introduces a structured Framework for Change, providing practical recommendations to enhance efficiency, resilience and collaboration across the sector.
