Class - Is There Still Discrimination?
|
|
|
|
Listen to our latest podcast episode featuring an inspiring conversation with
Stephen Slessor, CEO, RSE, to talk about class and EDI
.
Stephen identifies as working class and has built a stellar career. The water sector has traditionally recruited from a middle class graduate pool. Is working class talent being missed due to discrimination?
In this episode, Stephen gives his explanation as to why the water sector struggles to retain people from under-represented backgrounds and shares important messages about recruitment skills and respect. This episode covers key topics for senior leaders to consider:
-
Why diverse talent leaves
- Young people, women, and individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds are entering the sector, but why aren’t they staying?.
-
The role of onboarding and line management
- How traditional approaches may be limiting retention and engagement in today’s changing workplace.
-
Why class still matters
- What does it take to succeed without a degree or access to established networks?
-
Fear and unconscious bias in leadership
- How it can unintentionally hinder opportunities for emerging talent.
-
Recruiting beyond the CV
- Why values, behaviours, and an inclusive culture are increasingly essential to organisational success.

“
The water sector has traditionally recruited from the middle-class graduate pool—meaning working-class talent is often overlooked. Reflecting on my own journey, I’ve experienced how class-based barriers can silently shape ‘fit’ and opportunity. There’s a vital need for the sector to broaden its definition of what professionalism looks like, and to embrace diverse social backgrounds as strengths, not exceptions.
“
