While novel technologies are been developed, combinations of existing technologies are expected to offer the most viable solutions to mitigate against emerging pollutants. This is an interesting and timely area of water and wastewater treatment alike; progress will undoubtedly assist in the abatement of those compounds and alliance, through the establishment of a centre of excellence headed by British Water, will encourage innovation in this growing area of the UK water market.
Micropollutant Focus Group
The Micropollutants Focus Group was established in February 2020 with the intention of fostering supply chain initiatives for wastewater treatment solutions addressing these emerging organic pollutants.
The main objectives of the focus group are:
- Knowledge dissemination of different levels of technologies–e.g. promising technologies (TRL 5) through to commercially ready technologies (TRL 8)–and possible application/placement in the UK water market is the primary objective of
the focus group.
- Foster collaboration amongst research institutions, industry actors and supply chain to expedite R&D solutions.
- Inform the regulators with accurate industry level BATNEEC information, with emphasis on CAPEX, OPEX, carbon footprint/offset, energy consumption, and possible life-cycle analyses.
