Marcus Rink is the Chief Inspector of Drinking Water, appointed in August 2015. He has worked in the Department of Environment, (DEFRA), in various roles for over 20 years. As Chief Inspector he provides independent scrutiny of the
water industry ensuring the safety and quality of water and public confidence through a robust regulatory framework. His role encompasses a range of statutory and non-statutory functions, discharging the duties of the Secretary
of State for England and the Welsh Government to ensure companies meet their regulatory requirements and Local Authorities take action in respect of water supplies.
He is a contributing author in the book, Regulatory
Delivery, Civil Justice Systems on regulating quality outputs through an approach based on the provision of data to drive behaviour and has published two papers for the Institute of Water journal on the principles and practice
of delivering innovative regulation in drinking water.
Marcus is currently a member of the Strategic Regulators Group at DEFRA, a board member of The Regulators' Alliance for Progressing Infrastructure Development (RAPID)
and the Chair for the Standing Committee of Analysts. Through his recent career in drinking water regulation, Marcus was a member of: The EU expert group of the Drinking Water Directive; The Advisory EU Microbiology Expert Group
and the Chair of the Public Health Drinking Water Group at the London 2012 Olympics.
Marcus is a Chartered Biologist, a Chartered Scientist and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health. His career in Public
Health, Public Analysts, Severn Trent and at the Drinking Water Inspectorate spans over 35 years of regulation and enforcement, health, environment, and water.
