Food and beverage companies need to pay greater attention to their wastewater treatment processes, or risk penalties and reputational risk, that is according to Barry Mann, northern area sales manager at Atana.
Atana, which is part of the WCS Environmental Engineering, has been an industrial wastewater treatment systems provider for over 20 years, with leading food and beverage brands depending on the company not only for treatment chemicals, but also for dissolved air flotation (DAF) systems for primary treatment.
DAF is a clarifying wastewater treatment process proven to concentrate and remove a wide range of suspended solids in wastewater at a high rate of removal. Clients produce everything from tomato ketchup to whisky, fish fingers to cheese, so wastewater streams can be complex, with solids and fats, oils and grease (FOG) to manage and dispose of appropriately.
Increasingly, the company is working with clients to close the loop on wastewater – separating out valuable resources in a circular economy approach. Where large quantities of FOG are identified in the waste stream, as happened with one client recently, it may be possible for it to be recovered and fed to an anaerobic digestor as energy stock – generating revenue.
Similarly, the large volumes of water used in the food and beverage production can be treated to a high standard and reused on site, reducing abstraction from the utility’s network.
Meeting consents
For the team of specialist engineers, the day job is addressing clients’ potential issues with their water utilities over trade effluent consents, which limit discharges to the mains sewerage network. Trade effluent is defined in the Water Industry Act (1991) as “any liquid, either with or without particles of matter in suspension in the liquid, which is wholly or partly produced in the course of any trade or industry carried out at a trade premises.”
Given the spotlight on utilities, requiring them to tighten up their own operations, industrial water users can expect to feel continuing pressure to keep their houses – or treatment processes – in order. They risk significant fines and corporate reputational risk if they do breach, which should be a major consideration, especially for sensitive public-facing brands.
Sometimes engineers are called in right at the last minute, when clients are at immediate risk of breaching an environmental consent or incurring a fine. One of the reasons is that their priority often rests on their production lines, rather than the wastewater treatment systems underpinning the whole operation.
Early intervention
In nine-out-of-ten cases, the team is able to identify and implement a solution rapidly to turn the site around. The option of hire can provide immediate enhancement to onsite wastewater treatment, meaning compliance is achieved and businesses have breathing space to plan and implement a permanent fix.
Hire of a DAF treatment allows time for businesses to conduct a full-scale operational trial, with sampling and lab testing of wastewater, to build a case for capital funds, and ensure the correct processes are installed, helping inform a permanent solution.
However, it would be better for all parties if Atana’s expertise was brought to bear at a much earlier stage. A site visit and high-level audit from a skilled engineer could identify potential issues around compliance and the condition and capacity of equipment long before breaches arise.
It would also examine current operating performance and identify process efficiencies that could potentially deliver major whole-life cost and energy savings.
Each DAF treatment system is customised for a specific site’s requirements. The modular design means the whole plant – including pumps, screens, clarifier and controls – can be manufactured offsite and easily transported for rapid installation.
Prior to design and build, tests are carried out using samples of the client’s site effluent at Atana’s purpose-built laboratory at company headquarters in Coalville, UK. All contaminants are identified, and a suitable treatment regime specified and trialled, with a performance guarantee given, based on that trial.
During strike of the old equipment and installation of a new plant, a temporary facility can be put in place, meeting the existing standards at a minimum. The hire option ensures continuity of onsite treatment and compliance with discharge consents.
The option to hire and then trial the solution before purchasing also means compliance is achieved quickly, without a capital expenditure commitment. Industrial companies, whose core expertise may not lie in biological effluent treatment, are often surprised – and relieved – to learn there can be a simple solution to what is often seen as a complex and urgent issue.
DAF process
For the DAF process itself, feed wastewater is dosed with a chemical that causes the solid particles to flocculate and form larger clumps, prior to entry into the DAF flotation tank.
Within the tank, an air-saturated water-stream releases microbubbles of air into the body of the tank.
This lifts the solids, which are suspended in the wastewater, causing them to float to the surface. This frothy layer is then removed by a skimmer and the clear water exits the float tank and DAF unit as clarified effluent, ready for discharge to mains sewerage or to a secondary treatment stage, depending on the site requirements.
Effective and sustainable
As the food and beverage sector and other industrial water users respond to increasingly tight regulations and intensifying environmental concerns, they need treatment systems that are both effective and sustainable. Along with DAF, the comprehensive range of wastewater products, systems and services provided by Atana and WPL , WSC Environmental Engineering partners which means a huge diversity of pollutants can be addressed in-house, bringing sites into compliance rapidly.
Wastewater treatment can be made more cost and energy efficient, reducing carbon emissions in line with corporate sustainability goals, and salvaging substances that would otherwise be classed as waste in a circular economy of resources – potentially delivering new streams of revenue. Given the opportunities presented by developing more resilient onsite operations and processes, there has never been a better time to revisit wastewater treatment.

The Queens Award for Enterprise is presented to Bluewater Bio
The London-based water technology company delivers global environmental solutions whilst being recognized as the fastest growing water technology company in Europe.
Bluewater Bio, recognised as the fastest-growing UK and European water solutions provider, is delighted to announce that they have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade. This is the UK’s most prestigious business award which recognises outstanding achievement by a UK company.
Since 2015 when a new management team took the helm, the Company has gone from strength to strength, and is recognised as the fastest growing UK company in its sector for the last three years and now has the fastest growth throughout Europe.
Headquartered in London, Bluewater Bio delivers advanced and environmentally-friendly water technologies Worldwide, with a focus on markets and territories that are most affected by water scarcity.
Richard Haddon, Executive Chairman and CEO of Bluewater Bio, commented: “Our focus has, and continues to be, delivering world-class and environmentally-friendly solutions and services to our Clients around the world. The installation of our technology has prevented pollution and increased the amount of clean drinking water. Our continued industry-leading performance and growth is a testament to this strategy. Obtaining such esteemed recognition is a great honour, which we greatly appreciate.”
Water is at the core of sustainable development and it is critical for socio-economic improvement and healthy ecosystems. According to the United Nations (https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal6), in 2020, billions of people still lacked access to safe drinking water and safely managed sanitation. Two thirds of the world’s nations are currently not on track to have sustainably managed water resources by 2030.
Richard Haddon added: “It is clear that the availability and management of water resources are critical for humans to prosper. However, rapid population growth and industrial development is putting extreme stress on the planet’s water resources. Without further action, there is likely to be an escalation of various water-crises around the world. Our work in parts of the world that suffer acutely from these issues has never been more important.”

Marsh Industries, the leader in the field of off-mains drainage products, has announced the launch of the Marsh GEM-APS (Aerated Precipitation System).
The Gem-APS reduces phosphates, ammonia and BOD levels to meet the most stringent consent standards, providing surety for end-users and specifiers.
The aerated precipitation system treats effluent discharge in a controlled process involving small doses of chemical and oxygen that can then be discharged to a watercourse, ditch or drainage field.
Tested to EN12566-7-Annex A for up to 50PE, the Gem-APS is a tertiary treatment plant that can be installed at the outlet end of new or existing sewage treatment plants.
Initial test results at the PIA notified Test Centre, Aachen, were:
Phosphate 0.9mg/l
NH4-N 0.4mg/l
BOD 2.0mg/l
Marsh Managing Director, Steve Boyer, who oversaw the testing procedures said “It is almost a given notion that our products have a positive effect on the environment, however over the past year we have received increasing demand from all sectors asking us for independently verified testing of our products that demonstrates their environmental impact. The Gem-APS provides end-users and specifiers additional confidence in our range of environmentally sensitive waste water solutions.”
Gem-APS plants can be supplied in larger sizes (additional sizing was submitted as part of the EN12566-7 testing process) and can be regulated to reduce phosphate levels further if required.
Marsh offers commissioning and servicing of the Gem-APS. It is strongly advised this service is used when setting up the unit.
For further information and plant sizing, or if you want to discuss your next project, contact the Marsh technical team on contracts@marshindustries.co.uk or call 01933 654582.

Delivering premium quality solutions for the technical engineer sector
Tam Shahid is a Delivery Project Manager, Water Environment & Infrastructure Team. He joined Advance TRS in November 2020, specialising in the delivery process for Senior Consultants and generating suitable candidates to match client requirements/expectations.
Group MD and Founder Andy Ridout explains:
“Tam is an absolute asset to the company. In his time with us he has mastered the complexity and skill required to deliver exemplary service to both clients and candidates.
Tam project manages the assignments from our clients and supports our consultants throughout the process. Having the knowledge, expertise, and skillset to source and deliver niche engineering specialists, provides our clients with an efficient and top quality service, something Advance TRS is recognised for.”
Tam provides bespoke support to our Port Solent based Water and Environment team. The team offer an expert focus and quality recruitment service to both clients and candidates in the sector, consistently meeting and exceeding expectations. As a well-respected and effective recruitment partner, the team deliver results time and time again for a range of public and private sector clients across the UK. These include consultancies, contractors, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), placing exceptional talent in permanent, contract and interim roles.
In his time in the role, Tam has assisted in the development of a dynamic and efficient delivery function within the team and capable of supporting the sales function across market verticals. He truly understands the calibre of staff required for our business to thrive.
Today our Marketing Consultants sits down with Tam and his Director to understand more about the role Tam plays in driving the Port Solent office’s success and growth.
So, Tam, what led you to this career?
I started working from the age of 16 part-time within retail, whilst studying fulltime. Once I graduated from the University of Portsmouth, I was looking for a change in direction from Retail and came across Recruitment on the job boards. I saw this as an opportunity to expand on my skills in areas such as communication, time management, persuasion,
multi-tasking etc whilst also learning new skills, and learning about the specified markets.
What made you take the job at Advance TRS?
Advance TRS are a growing company and have a clear vision for the future. The company and colleagues I work with have specialist knowledge that enables you to progress in this role. Having previously worked with Rob Kelly at another company, I was managed and trained by him to a high level, so this also drew me to the role. I was excited to be contributing and be part of it all!
How has your role developed since you joined the company?
Initially I was asked to carry out a Senior Delivery role where I would generate candidates, working on live jobs, advertising roles, writing adverts etc. My role has since developed, and responsibilities now include supporting internal recruitment, project managing the growth of the delivery team, training and developing new staff and providing regular accurate reports on the delivery output. The managing director has approved training to gain my APMP qualification, to become a qualified project manager and progress my role even further.
In what way does your role assist your colleagues and the company?
My role helps support the Senior Sales team workload, allowing them to focus on other key areas and ease some of their work pressures. The process involved contributes to increasing our company reputation as we provide a more thorough and polished search, ensuring we are covering all markets and sourcing that ideal candidate for our clients. My experience within the role means I’ve developed a good understanding of the candidates I’ve spoken to, their skills, qualifications, responsibilities etc. So, when a client presents us with a role, I’m able to deliver someone suitable and who meets the requirements. Unlike other consultants, I don’t specialise in one area, or one job role, I’ve worked on a broad range of different roles and built a knowledge and understanding based on the job specification and the candidates. Each time we successfully fill a role, it increases our reputation and generates a flow of further work from the clients.
What complexities do you find with this role?
As with the nature of recruitment, it’s always tough when you lose out on a candidate. There are a number of reasons why they may have rejected a job offer but through experience, you learn when to be persuasive with someone, when you need to be persistent and when you need to be patient. It can sometimes be challenging trying to juggle multiple job roles, so the ability to multitask and be organised is key. You have to learn to prioritise the most important task.
What have been some of your biggest successes?
Since joining the team in November 2020 I have helped contribute to 31 placements for the business. I continually support the business with the growth of the delivery team.
If you are interested in learning from Tam and finding out how you can pursue a career in Delivery, we are always hiring. Find out more about our current opportunities here (https://www.advance-trs.com/about/careers-at-advance/)
Rob Kelly, our Water & Infrastructure Director works closely with Tam throughout the recruitment process. He explains the vital role Tam plays in supporting the candidates and meeting our clients’ requirements.
How would you describe the benefits of having Tam in his role?
Tam co-ordinates between our sales function and candidate delivery function. His role ensures an excellent experience for the candidates, developing a rapport with them throughout the entire hiring process. He has likely pre-interviewed and pre-referenced a volume of candidates and assessed their suitability prior to jobs being advertised by our clients. This provides clients with a more efficient, pro-active service and means we are able to quickly source appropriate candidates. This gives us and our clients an edge over competitors and puts us at the forefront of recruitment.
If you’re interested in joining our team, or viewing our latest sector vacancies, please visit our website https://www.advance-trs.com/jobs. Alternatively, you can speak to one of our dedicated team on 01483 361 061.
Why Advance TRS?
