Preventing Pipeline Failures Before They Happen


Pipeline failures do not always stem from ageing infrastructure - many begin at installation, writes Ben Crabtree, global product line director, Ovarro. Errors in jointing, manual testing and inconsistent quality assurance (QA) processes can reduce pipeline quality, leading to leaks, rework and increased costs.

Construction defects account for a significant proportion of pipeline incidents, underlining the need for greater confidence, precision and traceability in how networks are laid. Many faults only become apparent once a pipe is buried and under pressure.

At that stage, identifying and fixing issues becomes significantly more challenging, both operationally and financially. As utilities progress mains replacement programmes, the quality of pipeline installation forms a key part of the leak reduction efforts by preventing failures before they occur.

In a new report, the UK’s independent climate advisors, the Climate Change Committee, set out eight key areas for government action to address the growing impacts of climate change. Accelerated leakage reduction was identified as one way to tackle water shortages, with technology to provide up-to-date and real-time information on the system, highlighted as an enabler.

While real-time network monitoring is already well established in helping utilities pinpoint leaks, cutting edge technology is increasingly being used to prevent leaks before they occur through improved pipeline management.

Leading the way is digital quality assurance supplier ControlPoint, which integrated with technology company Ovarro five years ago. ControlPoint provides technical services to ensure correct installation of a range of pipe jointing methods, including electrofusion and flanged connections.

Completion of new water main installations is dependent on a pressure test to prove the pipe is watertight – but a significant number of new pipelines fail their first pressure test, mostly due to weeps and leaks on joints and flanges.

ControlPoint’s data-led tools remotely monitor new pipe installations to demonstrate compliance, providing a quality control check on installations to ensure pipelines are leak free from the point of installation.

Ovarro believes data-driven QA can also help change workforce behaviour. One example is TorqueAssist, a quality assurance app that demonstrates how data capture can support practical, on-the-ground tasks-in this case, flange and mechanical joint assemblies using a torque wrench.

The app captures installation data from bluetooth-enabled torques, including gasket and bolt types, along with inputs on location and weather. Using a mobile device, operatives are asked a series of questions to guide them through the tightening process, providing instant records of activity and evidence of compliance, while driving best practice. The data can also be used to monitor the future needs of the infrastructure.

A similar mobile app exists for electrofusion joint assemblies. JointAssist ensures fusion welds are completed ‘right first time’ - alerting the user to ensure critical non-conformities are not present when pipes are commissioned.

As companies move away from reactive network management, tools that improve visibility, to prevent failures at the point of installation, will play an increasingly important role in building more resilient networks.

Yorkshire Water Scales AI-driven Asset Monitoring


Yorkshire Water is significantly expanding its predictive condition monitoring programme as part of its AMP8 investment. Industrial artificial intelligence (AI) specialist Samotics is set to monitor a further 1,200 wastewater sewage pumping station assets and 300 clean water smart pumping assets over the next 18 months.

The expansion is one of the largest deployments of electrical signature analysis (ESA) technology in the UK water sector. It reflects the growing role of asset-level intelligence in helping utilities reduce pollution incidents, improve network resilience and meet stretching environmental targets in the water company’s regulatory asset management plan (AMP) for 2025-30.

The expansion builds on a partnership that began in 2022, when the utility first awarded Samotics a £10 million contract to deploy ESA across its pumping network. The programme has since grown to cover around 2,500 assets and won the Utility Week Award for Digital Transformation in December 2025. Once the AMP8 rollout is complete, Yorkshire Water will have more than 4,000 SAM4-monitored assets across its estate, making it the largest single-customer deployment of Samotics’ technology to date.

SAM4 uses ESA to monitor industrial equipment by analysing current and voltage signals captured remotely from motor control cabinets, with AI classifying deviations into specific fault types. At Yorkshire Water, the technology is being applied to submerged sewage pumps, screw pumps and clean water smart pumps.

These are some of the most operationally critical and hard-to-access assets in the network, where conventional vibration sensors are impractical to install. Faults detected include pump blockages, airlocks and misaligned components, often weeks before they would otherwise become visible. The platform is independently validated at 97% accuracy with fewer than 1% false positives.

The decision to scale the programme reflects three years monitoring operational outcomes. Across the partnership to date, SAM4 has detected 726 developing faults on Yorkshire Water assets, prevented 40 pollution events and delivered a confirmed detection value of £12.87 million. Evaluated across all monitored assets, the programme has delivered a 571% return on investment for Yorkshire Water.

“For the wider industry, what this expansion shows is that ESA is becoming a proven solution in monitoring the critical, hard-to-reach assets that have historically been a blind spot. Submerged pumps, screw pumps and other rotating equipment sit at the heart of pollution risk and unplanned downtime, and being able to detect faults early changes what’s operationally possible.

“As more UK water companies scale this kind of approach during AMP8, we expect it to make a measurable difference to pollution performance and network resilience across the sector.”

The 1,500-asset expansion is expected to be delivered over the next 18 months, taking the combined Yorkshire Water and Samotics programme into its next phase of scale during AMP8.

Indirect potable reuse (IPR) is the most common approach to water reuse, and one that UK water companies are starting to adopt as a critical component of their water resource strategies.

The process involves treating wastewater to a very high standard prior to release into a river, reservoir or aquifer, from which it can later be abstracted and further treated to produce safe drinking water. Moving IPR from concept to full-scale operation requires advanced treatment systems that can deliver continuous, 24/7 protection of public health, while consistently meeting regulatory standards.

Tackling Leakage In An Era Of “Weather Whiplash”


At a time of increasing weather volatility, it is no surprise that regulators expect water companies to maintain an intense focus on leakage detection, writes Dineke Fischer, senior executive, Ovarro

Three months after the last drought ended, dry conditions this spring have increased the risk of a summer drought in parts of England, reported the National Drought Group on 19 June 2026.

The latest drought group updated followed a warning from the Environment Agency in March 2026, that England was likely to experience “weather whiplash”, rapid swings between drought and flooding driven by climate change. The same conditions are being seen across much of Europe – Spain, for example, is being increasingly impacted by hydroclimatic volatility, according to researchers.

The challenge for water utilities is therefore no longer simply maintaining infrastructure, but building adaptive, flexible systems capable of responding to increasingly uncertain operating conditions.

For leakage specifically, extreme temperature changes will increase the frequency of conditions such as freeze-thaw events and prolonged dry spells, both of which can cause significant outbreaks of leaks. As such, regulators expect utilities to maintain the intensity of their drought planning year-round.

The good news is the technology to manage these scenarios rapidly and at scale already exists and is evolving at pace, alongside smart solutions that enable more preventative, data-driven leakage detection.

With its latest developments, Ovarro is working with water companies in the UK and worldwide on a three-pronged approach to leakage detection – 24/7 visibility, rapid detection and operational insight:

  • Continuous network visibility - loggers and RTUs gives operators real-time awareness of changing network conditions, helping identify anomalies before they escalate into major incidents.
  • Fast, accurate leak detection - equally critical during periods of uncertainty. Advanced correlating leak loggers and hydrophones can identify even small, long-running leaks with metre-level accuracy, including on difficult plastic pipes.
  • Cloud-based analytics platforms - combining acoustic and flow data to prioritise repairs, reduce false positives and identify long-term trends that support proactive maintenance and climate resilience.

One key digital development from Ovarro combines all three steps - EnigmaREACH, a lift-and-shift correlating hub. By combining a set of loggers, a single app to guide logger placement, retrieval and follow-up, plus automated analytics, EnigmaREACH reduces reliance on manual analysis to speed up the end-to-end leak detection process.

This is particularly valuable during breakout events and during drought conditions, where rapid detection of leaks is essential to protect constrained water supplies. A recent deployment in Paris demonstrates how the toolkit can support drought mitigation.

The Territorial Public Establishment Grand-Orly Seine Bièvre (EPT GOSB) is the largest territory in the Greater Paris metropolitan area.In its first French deployment, EnigmaREACH was able to cover up to 8km of network in a single correlation shot and identified three leaks simultaneously through 60-second sounds samples.

After the first four weeks of use, during which time the loggers were moved across multiple locations, 12 PoIs were raised and 10 leaks found, including long-running small leaks which had gone undetected, and leaking valves.


Managed Services

Alongside hardware and software, managed services are also becoming increasingly important to water companies. In this model, specialist providers take responsibility for delivering specific outcomes rather than simply supplying equipment - for example, measurable reductions in water loss.

Ovarro has seen growing global demand for managed services, particularly in leakage detection. LeakNavigator, for example, sees Ovarro’s leakage and data specialists plan logger deployment and provide ongoing analysis, sending PoIs directly to utility field teams via an app. This frees up resource for companies to focus on repairs and preventing water loss.

The challenge for the sector is no longer whether the technology exists to meet regulatory expectations and strengthen drought resilience - but how quickly it can be adopted and deployed at scale.

Building Digital Root Cause Capability With Anglian Water


Every quality and improvement professional knows that all investigations contain unique and valuable opportunities to learn, improve and prevent recurrence. Yet in large and complex organisations, crucial insights can often remain isolated within individual teams, functions or reports, limiting their potential to drive wider organisational improvement.

For water companies, where operational, environmental and asset management teams often face similar challenges from different perspectives, creating that organisational learning capability can be just as important as conducting the investigation itself.

This was the challenge Anglian Water set out to solve through a collaborative programme of work with Root Cause Analysis (RCA) specialists What Caused This, focused on strengthening RCA capability and creating a more connected approach to investigation learning.

 

The Need For Connected RCA Learning

For many large organisations, RCA activity is managed through a combination of spreadsheets, reports and team-specific processes spread across Operational, Environmental and Asset functions. And although investigations are often robust, the learning generated from them is not always easy to connect across the organisation. Information is frequently held within separate teams and systems, making it more challenging to identify recurring causes, recognise common themes and develop a broader understanding of emerging risks and improvement opportunities.

 

Creating Consistency Across Operational Teams

Recognising the value of a more connected approach to investigation learning, Anglian Water began working with What Caused This to explore how knowledge and insight could be shared more effectively across the business.

Rather than simply implementing a technology solution, the project focused on understanding how investigations were conducted across different teams, how learning was captured, and how valuable insights could be shared more effectively across the organisation. Working closely together, the two organisations combined operational experience, investigation expertise and practical feedback from users to shape an approach that reflected the realities of day-to-day operations. The result was a digital RCA platform designed not only to support individual investigations, but also to strengthen organisational learning across Operational, Environmental and Asset teams.

This collaborative approach helped ensure that the solution aligned with existing ways of working while creating a consistent framework for capturing, analysing and sharing investigation learning.

 

From Individual Investigations To Organisational Insight

By bringing investigations together within a single platform, Anglian Water has improved visibility of event causes, common themes and systemic risks across the organisation. Investigation findings can now be reviewed and compared more consistently, helping teams identify opportunities for preventative action and continuous improvement.

The platform has also supported a more transparent and evidence-based approach to RCA, meeting the challenge of improving consistency while reducing the administrative effort associated with managing investigations across multiple systems and formats.

Molly Bartlett, Intervention Optimisation Lead, for Anglian Water’s Pollution Response Team, says that “Working collaboratively with What Caused This has been a genuinely positive experience for our teams. The new approach has also supported faster, more evidence-based investigations, enabling teams to collaborate easily and focus less on administration and more on understanding why events occur and how to stop them. Most importantly, it has strengthened organisational learning by making investigation insights easier to access, share and apply across the business.

Xylem Shares Nanobubble and UV Expertise at EWWM


Xylem will spotlight the latest advances in wastewater treatment and water reuse at the European Wastewater Management Conference (EWWWM), taking place in Telford, UK, on 16-17 June 2026.

Process engineers from Xylem's global team will share insights into the use of nanobubble technology for enhanced nutrient removal, alongside the challenge of designing UV disinfection systems for non-prtable water reuse under new EU regulations.


Nanobubble Technology

Duncan Wildgoose, Xylem UK's BDM for treatment - wastewater & water, will co-present on the growing role of nanobubble technology in helping utilities address tighter nutrient limits and increasingly variable conditions, which are challenging the performance of biological nutrient removial (BNR) processes. He will present with Cesar Herrera, senior water process engineer at Moleaer.

Supported by performance data from full-scale installations, the presentation will demonstrate how utiltieis have achieved higher itrogen removal, lower aeration energy demand, reduced chemical use and increased biogras production - helping sites expand capacity and maintain compliance without the need for additional tankage.


UV Disinfection

Kirsten Meyer, Xylem's director of product management disinfection and aquatics, and Uwe Hubner, senior process engineer - advanced oxidation and water reuse, will examine the challenge of designing UV disinfection systems for non-portable water reuse under new EU regulations.

Meyer and Hubner wille xplain procedures to determine required UV doses for compliance, highlight challenges for system design and validation monitoring, cross-referencing experiences from different countries and outline research needs to improve the accuracy of UV system designs.

In addition, a poster presentation. 'Maximising asset resilience through rationalisation and standardisation' running throughout, will showcase projects with United Utilties Enterprise and Yorkshire Water.

EWWM will be held at Telford International Centre.

WATR Partners with UWE Bristol on Innovative River Monitoring Project to Transform UK Water Quality Assessment


WATR today announced its collaboration with the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) on the groundbreaking MaD-OPS (Monitoring and Detection of Organic Pollution from Sewage) project, a UKRI and NERC-funded initiative aimed at revolutionising how river health is monitored and understood across the United Kingdom.

Rivers across the UK are facing significant ecological challenges following years of environmental pressure, over-exploitation, and increasing urbanisation. Outdated Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) systems, originally designed for emergency use, are now routinely discharging sewage into waterways due to population growth and system limitations. Recent regulatory developments, including Section 82 of the UK’s continuous water quality monitoring programme, now mandate more comprehensive monitoring upstream and downstream of all CSO discharge points.

However, current monitoring approaches focused on a limited set of physicochemical parameters such as dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, conductivity, and ammonia, offer only a partial picture of river health. Traditional biological assessments, including macroinvertebrate and faecal coliform sampling, rely on infrequent spot sampling, often missing critical pollution events.

The MaD-OPS project addresses these gaps by deploying advanced fluorescence-based optical sensors developed by Chelsea Technologies. These sensors continuously monitor key biological indicators, including tryptophan-like fluorescence (TLF), fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM), and algal pigments such as phycocyanin and chlorophyll-a. This high-resolution data is complemented by spot sampling and physicochemical measurements to provide a comprehensive, real-time understanding of river ecosystems.

WATR’s platform plays a central role in enabling this integrated sensing network. Its cloud-based dashboard facilitates high-frequency, real-time data collection and remote access, while supporting seamless integration with third-party sensors. The platform’s API capabilities and collaborative environment allow project partners to work effectively across multiple challenging field sites, aligning with the project’s vision of smarter, more meaningful monitoring.

The project, developed in response to the urgent need for long-term, high-resolution river monitoring, brings together leading organisations including UWE Bristol, Chelsea Technologies, and The Rivers Trust. It aims to demonstrate the value of combining biological, chemical, and physical data streams, assess the effectiveness of fluorescence sensors in detecting organic pollution, and develop a dynamic, user-friendly Water Quality Index (WQI) for real-time river health assessment.

Success will be measured through continuous monitoring across seven deployment sites, validation of sensor data against laboratory instruments, and the identification of distinct pollution signatures, including those from sewage and agricultural sources. The project also seeks to establish dynamic baselines by comparing impacted sites to headwaters and to demonstrate the added value of continuous biological monitoring.

Making Storm Overflow Data Make Sense


With the UK government demanding a 50% reduction in storm overflow spills by 2029, the era of reactive management is over.

Speaking in the House of Commons on 21 July 2025, environment secretary Steve reed said, "The Government will cut water companies' sewage pollution in half by the end of the decade."

Metaspher, a Grundfos company, has responded to this shift with the launch of a dedicated monitoring device called Sense, which is engineered to provide the near real-time, preventative data essential for meeting these unprecedented compliance targets. The launch of Sense comes as utilities grapple with the escalating pressure of the AMP* investment cycle (2025-30) and explicit promises made by the government.

This goal, which has since been confirmed by Defra, translates to a reduction in total number of storm overflow spills in England from the 2024 baseline of over 450,000 to 225,199 at most, by the end of 2029. The ambitious target combined with Ofwat's existing requirement for a 45% reduction by 2029, shifts the focus from reporting failure to guaranteeing prevention.

 

Regulatory Challenge

The independent Water Commission's final report made it clear that fragmented regulation and a reliance on self-moitoring are no-longer fit for purpose. The challenge is now for water utilities to deliver accountability through demonstrably better performance - requiring comprehensive, real-time data.

Metasphere's Sense is designed to provide a full circle approach to wastewater management which is critical for meeting AMP8's core objectives.

Enabling Prevention

To achieve a 50% spill reduction, companies must manage their network capacity before heavy downpours force overflows. Sense is built to function as a digital sensor hub. Its ability to integrate seamlessly with third-party digital sensors means utilities can move beyond siloed data towards the complete digitisation prioritised in AMP8.

The resulting data also informs Drainage & Wastewater Management Plans (DWMPs), ensuring that the £104 billion investment for England and Wales is targeted where ir can deliver the maximum environmental and compliance benefit.

 

Future-Proof Design

Sense is designed for operational longevity, ensuring that sustained compliance does not come at the cost of excessive maintence or carbon intensity. At the core of this reliability is the telemetry unit's estimated eight-year battery lifespan. This dramatically reduces the need for costly, disruptive, and frequent site visits that often undermine the effeciency of long-term monitoring rollout, allowing utilities to maximuse field crew time and minimise operational expenditure over the AMP cycle.

In addition, the system is flexible and future-proof sue to its modular design. This allows utilities to adapt their investment as network management demands evolve, easily expanding their monitoring capabilities into areas like pressure, temperature, or other critical parameters.

SudsPlanter: Rain gardens bring sustainable drainage lessons to village school


An eco - conscious primary school keen to play its part in reducinglocal flood risk has implemented a small - scale sustainable drainage system (SuDS) to manage surface water runoff

Abbotts Ann Church of England Primary School, in the village of Abbotts Ann, near Andover, Hampshire, secured an award from the community grant scheme of Watercress & Winterbournes, a Landscape Partnership Scheme. The scheme is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and brings together 15 partners, including Wessex Rivers Trust, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Hampshire County Council to support community initiatives that protect the chalk stream headwaters of the Rivers Test and Itchen

In a project driven by an eco-team of 14 pupils and one teacher, the school developed a “slowing the flow” initiative to help manage surface water runoff onsite. The team researched sustainable drainage options, before selecting two modular rain garden planters from Sudsplanter Ltd.  

Repeat flooding

Abbotts Ann and nine neighbouring parishes have experienced repeated flooding in recent years, due to factors including sewer network capacity and groundwater infiltration into the network.

During periods of peak flow, tankers have on occasion been deployed to help manage wastewater volumes that exceed the network’s capacity. Without these shipments, sewers could become overloaded and the risk of flooding and sewage pollution increases.

Alongside disruption to residents, this could impact local water quality, particularly for the Pillhill Brook, a 10km chalk stream that flows through the village before joining the River Anton and ultimately the River Test

Abbotts Ann CE Primary School is actively engaged in hands-on environmental learning, with a strong focus on water and nature. Although the school site has not been directly affected by flooding, its eco-team is committed to making a positive contribution to the local environment

The majority of the grant funding was invested in:

  • Installation of two SuDSPlanter® rain garden units within the school’s inner courtyard, designed to intercept and attenuate roof runoff
  • Integration of a cloud-tray engagement feature, creating a visible and interactive element which demonstrates how surface water is managed

The project also included installation of a water butt, design and printing of a water-saving take-home leaflet and pledge card for every pupil in the school , video explainers and eight lunchtime learning sessions led by Wessex Rivers Trust 

Unique rain gardens

SuDSPlanters are design-engineered rain gardens that intercept roof runoff via rerouted downpipes, and direct flows into a system of planters - and away from drains and sewers - during heavy rain.

The systems are designed for hard- surfaced environments such as playgrounds and car parks. Within each planter, as well as being taken up by plants, water is filtered by a specially selected, layered soil mix, temporarily stored, then released in a controlled way. The planters also provide drought resilience by retaining moisture and gradually releasing it into the soil during dry periods

SuDSPlanters were selected for the Abbotts Ann project for their structural durability while also providing a visually attractive, engaging feature. Thedecision was further helped by a recommendation from a neighbouring school, which had recently installed a unit 

Outdoor Learning

SuDSPlanters landscaping specialists chose pollinator-friendly plants which can be a focal point for lessons in wildlife, conservation, climate resilience and the water cycle.

Tracy Standish, Watercress & Winterbournes’ education officer at Wessex Rivers Trust, worked with the school on the project and ran educational workshops. She said: “The planters look fantastic and really complement the school environment.

“Because the installation is in a visible part of the school, we were keen for it to feel like a feature and to be functional but engaging. The project ticked lots of boxes for us and the school in terms of engagement, values and environmental education - everyone involved is proud to be doing their bit to support flood mitigation in the local community.”

Alex Stephenson, Sudsplanter director, said: “In catchments such as the River Test and River Itchen, where groundwater levels and network capacity present ongoing challenges, small-scale sustainable drainage systems can form part of a wider strategy to manage flood risk and improve water quality. In Abbotts Ann, the SuDSPlanter is not only providing flood mitigation but is also serving as a green, interactive educational tool that can support wellbeing as well as environmental learning.”

NISTA’s Becky Wood On Water’s Central Role Supporting Government Long-Term Growth Mission


At our House of Lords reception on 23 April members heard National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA) Chief Executive Becky Wood say stability, confidence, collaboration and a commitment to deliver the 10-Year Infrastructure Strategy sit at the heart of NISTA’s work. Strengthening investor confidence and linking long-term outcomes to near-term decisions were crucial to helping supply chains plan effectively and avoid capacity issues.

The Dynamic Infrastructure Pipeline (recently updated with workforce demand data), a slimmed-down Government Major Projects Portfolio, and working with Public Financial Institutions on new financing and business models, are among the tools NISTA is using to transform how infrastructure is planned and delivered. Addressing water scarcity by delivering new water and wastewater infrastructure – not least reservoirs – was, she said, crucial to the success of the government’s goals of 1.5 million new homes by 2030 and building new towns. She also stressed that better management of the country’s legacy assets was equally as important to the strategy’s overall success.

NISTA’s spatial planning approach, supported by its ALIGN tool, would ensure the infrastructure a community needs – not just water but transport, housing, energy and digital – is considered in the round, making subsequent trade-off decisions easier. Using AI to improve NISTA’s capacity to synthesise and analyse government and private sector data will also allow government to better identify pinch points and gaps, and better sequence projects to reflect resource constraints and workforce readiness.

In closing, Becky said NISTA’s focus on addressing cross-cutting barriers and ensuring better alignment of policy, regulation and delivery are all about giving supply chains the confidence to plan ahead and invest. She also welcomed the chance events such as the reception offered to hear directly from companies at the sharp end of delivery.

United Utilities All Partner Event 2026

On the 5th April, United Utilities hosted their Partner Event in the seaside town of Blackpool, bringing together many of the organisations who help deliver for the eight million customers they serve. Over 650 people attended the day, here’s a quick run-through of the key messages and updates shared on the day from UU’s perspective;

Growing And Strengthening Our Partner Network

From a handful of capital delivery suppliers to over 100. This gives us access to a huge range of skills, talent and innovation, while keeping a strong focus on efficiency, value and quality. Our partners aren’t just delivery support; they’re ambassadors for the essential services we provide.

Being A Great Client

We’re operating in a competitive environment. A key theme of the event was our commitment to being a good client: sharing plans early, paying on time, collaborating well and continuing to build strong, productive relationships.

Delivering At Pace For AMP8 And Beyond

Partners spoke about the scale of change needed to meet AMP8 ambitions and how our Enterprise approach is helping us deliver large, complex “mega” projects more effectively and efficiently. There was also acknowledgement for all sizes of project and partner and that this truly is a team effort.

Regulation, Security And Safety

The wider context was also front and centre: changing regulation, the need for strong cybersecurity across systems and sites, and our unwavering commitment to health and safety.

Progress On The BIG North West Upgrade

Our upgrade programme continues to build momentum. We have 1,416 projects to deliver this AMP period - with 214 already complete and another 214 in construction thanks to strong collaboration. We’ll be doing more to highlight progress locally and show customers the value of their investment.

Collaboration And Supplier Relationships

Lou Beardmore, CEO hosted a Q&A with Steve Slessor, CEO of Ross-Shire Engineering and Chair of British Water. He emphasised how clarity, predictability and pace are essential to true collaboration and how encouraging it is to see how we have “moved from words to action”. We also heard from John Welch, Commercial Director and Helen Kowe, Head of Commercial Strategy on supplier relationship management, which remains a top priority.

Real-Time Monitoring Cuts Pollution Risk At Scottish Water Site

When a strategic Scottish Water pumping station had to be taken out of service unexpectantly, the utility faced the risk of over-pumping. Working with Xylem and its Avensor service, the team used real-time insights to resolve the issue, avoid disruption and return the station to full operation, writes Mark McCullagh, Xylem’s Scotland South project manager.

Planned Maintenance

Scottish Water and Xylem were carrying out planned maintenance at St Nicholas Sewage Pumping Station (SPS), a large, terminal site in St Andrews, which receives flows from five upstream stations. The scope included replacing an inlet gate valve and non-return valve (NRV), along with pump impellers and wear plates.

During the works, engineers found the isolation valve was not sealing, allowing pressure to backflow. This meant the NRV could not be replaced without fully draining the line back into the wet well. Attempts to reseal the flanges failed as the pressure had damaged the gasket beyond repair.

Tankering was not viable due to high inflows exceeding available capacity, leaving the station reliant on its standby pump. Without a quick solution, costly and disruptive over-pumping would have been required – with any failures potentially impacting the famous St Andrews golf course.

The team instead developed a solution to restrict flows from the five upstream stations using their available storage, while the rising main was drained and the NRV replaced. This approach required real-time monitoring of the five stations. Crucially, two of the assets were equipped with Xylem’s Avensor monitoring system, providing live data on levels and asset health.

Data-Driven Insights

Avensor is a digital service that provides alerts and data-driven insights from a device connected to pumping stations or other assets. Once a modem is installed, Avensor collects and analyses data to give a complete overview of all connected operations, including trends and alerts, via the web and a mobile app.

Insights from Avensor allowed engineers to remotely monitor conditions and attend sites only when necessary to pump water in a controlled manner. The remaining three stations were monitored through periodic site checks. With this intelligence in place, St Nicholas SPS was safely shut down, the rising main fully drained and the NRV replaced.

Throughout the operation, teams worked collaboratively, adapting plans in real-time. As a result, Scottish Water asked Xylem to quote for additional work onsite.

Results

  • St Nicholas SPS returned to full operational status without the need for over-pumping
  • Significant cost and time savings achieved by avoiding additional mitigation measures
  • Environmental risk reduced, with controlled flows preventing pollution events
  • Minimal disruption to Scottish Water operations despite the complexity of the site
  • Demonstrated value of Avensor, providing real-time intelligence at a critical moment

This project highlights how Xylem’s engineering expertise, rapid problem solving and digital monitoring technology can resolve unexpected issues on complex assets. It also demonstrates the wider value of Avensor, enabling operators to make informed, timely decisions that mitigate pollution risk and deliver better outcomes.

Mike Kelly, Scottish Water’s wastewater networks team leader, said: “This was a complex job on a busy terminal pumping station. Having live information available allowed our team to manage incoming flows safely, respond quickly and keep the wider environment protected while the work was completed. Working closely with Xylem, we were able to restore the station to full operation, avoiding the cost and disruption associated with temporary over-pumping.”
